S.A. was based in Tramelan, in the Swiss Jura region, with roots around 1903. In 1916 it merged with several firms as Record Dreadnought Watch Co. S.A., reverting to the original name in 1949; in 1960 a Record pocket watch (calibre 435B) became the first Swiss watch widely accepted on US railroads, and in 1961 Longines bought a majority interest and some watches were subsequently signed Longines-Record.

Record produced some lovely triple calendar watches and the incredible 'Datofix', a full calendar, moonphase and chronograph. I'm very much on the lookout for one of these.

Record was also one of the twelve watch producers known by collectors as the "Dirty Dozen" that supplied field watches to the British MoD in WWII, which is a fair marker of the company's standing. The brand faded during the 1970s quartz upheaval.

Tech Specs.

Reference: Record de luxe
Year: c.1950s/early 60s
Movement: Cal. 667 manual wind.
Service History: unknown
Dial: silver with Roman numeral indices
Case: Plaque G 20. It's a Roman-numeral dial with small-seconds subdial at six o'clock: the classic mid-century Swiss dress format.

The "20 microns" mark refers to the thickness of the electroplated gold layer, and it's a meaningful quality signal: 5 or 10 microns was the norm on cheaper watches, so 20 (usually stamped Plaqué Or G20 or similar inside or on the back) indicates a better-grade case that wears for decades before rubbing through on the lug edges and bezel high points.

The calibre 676 is a manual-wind jewelled movement from Record's own 6xx family, the firm made its own calibres rather than buying in ébauches (usually an unfinished movement sold by a movement factory to an outside watch brand for finishing and assembly).

Record never published a register, so it won't date the watch precisely, though the styling points to roughly the late 1950s–1960s. All in all a classy, elegant and simple Swiss watch from the distant past.
